So, I completely forgot to blog about the fun times at our house including fire trucks and TV news crews. No comparison to SoCal wildfires. Been there. Done that. Thought we left it behind in Cali. Those unusually warm November days a week or so ago brought with them some Santa Ana-ish winds.
I put Owen down for a nap and heard lots of sirens while folding laundry. I know, I was actually folding laundry! I happened to be upstairs and glanced outside and noticed lots of smoke. There was a fire somewhere in the forest behind our house. By the time I went down to our deck to see what I could, the firemen and police were making their way through our yard to check out the 'blaze." From my deck I could see that there was fire, but it wasn't raging. My neighbors gathered in my backyard to watch. The firemen didn't seem to be in hurry, so I figured I didn't need to evacuate. The logistics of getting the water hoses to the fire seemed to present a problem. While the trucks were getting into place and all the firemen went to get their hoses the winds picked up and the fire moved pretty quickly burning up tons of dry leaves in its path.
In the midst of the action I hear Owen yelling and I look up at his bedroom window and he's plastered there watching the scene below. Needless to say, no nap. He got up close and personal with the firetrucks and even sang a song about his very own Higgley Town Heroes.

Aaaah! He sings just like Gaby!! That was great!! How close, exactly, did those flames get to your house? And what exactly caused the fire in the first place??
You've seen a lot from your back yard in the last year or so, haven't you???
How freaking cute!!!
And the fire is kinda freaky!
That is soo crazy about the Stricklands. I didn't know they were in Iowa now. Are they settled there? I guess that does sound vaguely familiar. What a small world.
I am SO not letting my boys see these pictures. If they had any idea that "blazes bring heroes" (firemen, not sandwiches) they'd set fire to our whole house just to watch for the trucks. It's in their genes. My cousin started a fire in the foothills around Provo and it burned for 2 days. He was 9.
Claire's got eyes for Owen...how adorable. She keeps wanting to watch him sing...
Geez! But, I have to say, as an Ugly Mom my first reaction was, "Wow! Good for you for having you hair and makeup already done. What good luck!" I would have insisted on being on camera. In fact, I probably would have grabbed the microphone and just started reporting.
Some people will do anything to top a "the dog ate my size 11s" blog. And how did it start again? :-)
Some people have all the luck, I guess.
