Just Ducky

My sprint triathlon is 2 weeks away. I surely haven't trained like I should have, which means I run a couple times a week and I have yet to get on a bike. Unfortunately, my strength is swimming and it's the shortest distance of the race and it's the first leg, so it's basically downhill after I get out of the water.

I'm trying to like running, but I'm just not there yet. Anna blogged about a running challenge she took on (you go girl!) and it inspired me to run today, we'll see about tomorrow. It rained a lot today and cooled off, so my afternoon run was great for the most part.

I always run the same route. I know I should spice it up and try some other routes, that just might make the chore seem less tedious. I run around a lake near our house. It's a nice trail surrounded on all sides by a railroad yard, chain link fences and factories. Not exactly picturesque, but I'll take it. Seeing that it's spring, there are tons of cute little fuzzy ducklings and goslings hatching all over the place.

I know from prior experience that geese in these parts can be a little aggressive and now that there are babies to protect one must consider using caution when in the presence of mama and papa ducks and geese. Today, my first encounter with one such gaggle of geese (6 adults and about 20 babies) went off without a hitch. They were crossing a few yards ahead of me, so I slowed down. Once they were safely across the path, I jogged on by without a second glance.

My second encounter did not end so pleasantly. I adopted the same technique by slowing down and waiting for them to cross (a mama, papa and three bitty baby fuzzy goslings). Papa Goose was hissing at me, and I took that as my cue to stop and let them go on their merry way. Once the family was on the other side of the path I took one step to continue on my way and he charged at me. Holy goose eggs, Batman! What do to? I tried my best to evade the crazy goose, but he was relentless. He basically flew at me and flapped me good and hard until he decided I was no threat, knocking my iPod earphones out of my ears in the process, but leaving me relatively unscathed (see photo for goose footprints all over my back! I feel like there is a big scratch on my back, I'm guessing he may have tried to bite me). His little goslings now have a great story to tell all their goose friends at school tomorrow.

Next time I run, Max is going with me and who knows, maybe we'll just be having some foie gras for dinner.

My favorite way to get inspired to run is to go to runnersworld.com and read blogs and watch videos. It's awesome.
As for the goose...HOLY CRAP! I don't know if I would ever run again! AAAAHHHHH!!!!!
Happy Anniversary to Gracia and Steve! 40 years, that's an inspiration right there!
I love the mud in your back yard. My boys are so totally jealous. But I do have to say that the progress looks really good. I like the look of it so far!
Owen in a big boy bed?!?!?!?! Awww! I can't believe he's so big already. Miles is going back and forth from crib to bed on a nightly/nap-ly basis. He naps in his pack 'n play and sometimes sleeps there at night. Sometimes he sleeps with Cameron sometimes by himself. He likes having options:)

LOVE the footprints. That's crazy. LOL. Sorry, I'm still laughing about it. HA and HA again! You think the goslings are telling stories -- I bet Mr. Goose was bragging at the bus stop. Wonder if geese blog, I'd love to hear his side of it. Ahhh. You're funny.

That is just hilarious. If I were you, I'd probably never run again, either. But then again, the triathlon probably wouldn't go so well if you didn't...good luck with that, by the way! You know what would make that story even funnier? If instead of geese, they were monkeys. And instead of flying at you, they flung poo at you. Now that's funny:)

But your yard is looking fabulous, I really do like the new walls your putting in. Those aerial views really do make much more sense than some of the others... You think you'll have it done by end of summer?? I think you will...especially if you've got all your pregnant friends to help you with the heavy lifting!!

I had a hard time with my half marathon training too Sara. I started off the year with a bang and I was all gung ho. Even ran in the ice rain, snow, sleet...was super proud of myself. When it came to four miles and beyond I struggled. Not just because of the weather and conditions but because I didn't love running. However, since being home, I have a newfound love for the run. Maybe because I'm back in my roots, or it's because I'm in the country again. Whatever it is, I needed it and am now inspired to stick with it when I get back to OKC. So what I am trying ot say is, yes you need to spice it up....try a different route. It may help you get over your hump!!!

Good luck! I am super proud of you !!!!
