Family Home Evening

Our church encourages families to set aside one night a week where they can spend time together as a family.  This usually involves some singing, some scripture reading, some screaming, some crying, a whole lot of long suffering and always treats/dessert/ice cream.  Some weeks are great, some weeks we’re lucky if we squeeze in a family prayer before everyone is banished to their rooms.  There is no perfect way to do it.  Some families are super organized.  We are not one of those families, but I’m trying to make more of an effort to make the most of this time we spend together.

Family Home Evening was a smashing success last night, the only problem was it ended with everyone arguing over who wanted to be Satan. Jerry commented that perhaps I shouldn't make the role of Satan so much fun. Duly noted.

Owen started us off by teaching us the song “Hip Hop Candy Rock.”  Very entertaining and all the Kilgores busted a move, yo.

During General Conference Lydia had tried to assemble an Armor of God activity from one of our activity packets {HERE} . When the balloon(s) popped she opted to make a poster, which gave me the idea to use her creation for FHE.

Here's Owen modeling our homemade suit of armor.

Lydia had picked out the scripture Ephesians 6:11 "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." We talked about the tricks Satan uses to try and get us to make bad choices. We also may have talked about Wile E. Coyote.

As we built our suit of armor we talked about how each thing - peace, readiness, truth, righteousness, faith, salvation helps us to not fall for Satan's tricks.

Then Satan, cleverly disguised as a Nerf gun sharpshooter, took aim at the armor. Each dart was some trick that had relevance to the shooter - greed, laziness, selfishness, dishonesty, etc.

Hopefully the message of "Our armor provides us protection" will be remembered, instead of how much fun it is to be Satan.

Last week's FHE was super fun with no gospel tie in whatsoever. We played Minute To Win It games. So, so fun. The game's website has all the "blueprints" for the games, so you can pick the ones that will work best for your family.  These games also work great for kids’ school/birthday parties.

I need to come to your house on Monday nights! Tonight's FHE will be us watching the new Joseph Smith movie whilst devouring a pan of rice crispy treats. I'd recommend it.

Also too Sophie totally got kicked out of FHE last week. And that was the night Chase's lesson involved going to the park to fly kites! (seriously, it was tied in to actual gospel principles)
