If my elves could do a sad dance they would be doing right now. Due to circumstances that are causing sore afflictions, we shall be staying in Iowa for Christmas. In the grand scheme of things, we are blessed beyond measure. Jerry offered a little perspective yesterday as we were driving home in our shared vehicle whilst my van still sits in the shop and I was lamenting the injustice of said van needing a new transmission. The gist of the story (From NPR?) tells of a man who having lived, worked, paid taxes, raised a family, received an education in the U.S. nearly his whole life was deported to Mexico, the country of his birth, after applying for immigrant status. Not offering an opinion/platform on the matter of immigration reform, rather, his life by far is way worse than mine. And in all likelihood he is handling his trials and challenges with much more grace than I (picture me on the floor in a full blown toddler style temper tantrum, "It'snotfair! IwannagotoPeeYayandhavefunwitheveryoneelse!")
Following the admonition of President Monson, I am still able to find joy in the journey. Case in point: my phone/internet service was restored today after being shut down (a minor accounting error involving me thinking that BillPay would pay my bills for me even when I forget to tell it to do so). Also too, it is snowing. It's quite lovely and since I don't have a car I don't have to be out driving in it.
Wishing you and yours a whole lot of merry!

OH... Our elves are sad for your elves. And sad for your transmission. But happy that you're managing to count your blessings anyway. And if history teaches us anything, it is that you will probably end up adding "SOOOO glad we didn't attend the Annual Kilgore Family Christmas Sick-Fest" to the list of blessings you're counting. ;P We will definitely miss you, though.
P.S. Don't get me started on immigration reform.
I'm sure you will enjoy the sickfest from the comfort of your own home this year! LOL!!!
Sorry, I kid. I KID!
Isn't life grand. I swear being a grown up really does stink sometimes. Sorry for your sad news.
Well that's about the saddest thing I've ever heard (you, not the guy with the immigration issues...though, that's pretty sad, too, come to think of it...).
BUT, kudos to you for getting your chin up and deciding to just enjoy the ride. AND just think what you're missing:
1. 30 hours in the car, accompanied by approximately 30 potty stops, 7.5 meltdowns, 14 "She's TOUCHING ME's" from the backseat, 26 "are we THERE yet?'s", and one entire bag of Candy Cane Oreo's (have you tried these? they're amazing).
2. The flu X 6.
3. The 12-cousin brawl that will most likely ensue when the cousins eye-up each other's Christmas present and decide to make a grab.
4. Sleeping on an air mattress. Or the floor. Or not sleeping.
5. Missed naps + late nights + out of the normal routine + too many presents/candy = CRANK FEST 2008!
6. Cleaning up someone's throwup in the middle of a public place.
7. Have I mentioned that after this you still have to drive 15 hours (probably in a snowstorm) to get home? Oh, and if it wasn't your transmission BEFORE the trip, it would have been your transmission DURING the trip. How's THAT for perspective?!
I'm still going to miss you guys. Who's going to late-night dance with me, Taylor?!
p.s. Don't get me started on immigration reform:)
I second EVERYTHING Anna said. Save that for August! LOL!
